An Old Killer Finds Foothold in South Africa

Tonight on the NewsHour: Tuberculosis is an old disease that has been given new life by HIV. In the second report in the NewsHour global health series from South Africa, Ray Suarez travels to Durban and rural KwaZulu-Natal province to investigate HIV-TB co-infection.

Although HIV infected patients are living longer due to antiretroviral drugs, their weakened immune systems make them particularly susceptible to TB, which has become their number one killer. Complicating matters, strains of TB are now resistant to many drugs, leaving researchers scrambling to battle the resurgent disease.

    I do agree that TB infections are really compounding the course of HIV -AIDS infection.There is no doubt a high prevalence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis amongs HIV-AIDS patients in Sub subsaharan Africa,but our experience in Cameroon does indicates that many other silent infections are are equally taking the stage and defining the course of the disease ,even more than TB.Forinstance ,in North West Cameroon systemic Fungi infections and other parasitic infections such as Toxoplasmosis are really high on the list than TB.
    We are advocating the validation of indigenous pharmaceuticals in attending to HIV,TB and other infections as a way out.This we think should be incorporated in to global efforts for the search for Sustainable health solutions.

    Nutrition and spices could play a role in the control of TB and HIV as immunity is boosted.Our experience at our Clinics with alternative and Complementary follow up on such cases suggest an integrative health appraoch to TB and HIV.This approach tends to improve on the activity spectrum of the First line antibiotic drugs used in the treatment for TB.

    A total of 530 HIV-seropositive patients, undergoing treatment at the Phytobiotechnology Research
    Foundation (PRF) Clinic from May 2007 to May 2008, were screened for yeast infection using various
    specimens. Of the total number of patients, 318 were females and 212 were males. The specimens
    comprised 550 stools specimens, 422 oral swabs, 98 sputum specimens, 60 vaginal swabs and 25 urine
    specimens. These were aerobically cultured on Sabouraud dextrose and potato dextrose agar media. A
    total of 79.6% of the patients indicated presence of yeast in oral specimens, while 28.3% indicated the
    presence of yeasts in stool specimens. Candida albicans was the sole isolate from urine and vaginal
    swabs. Geotrichium candidum was solely isolated from stool specimens (18.75%), while Cryptococcus
    neoformans (5%) was also isolated from sputum specimens. Bulk methanol extracts of Magnifera indica
    (mango) seeds, Aspilia africana (African iodine) leaves, Ageratum conyzoides (goat weed/king grass)
    leaves, Allium sativum (garlic) bulb, Vernonia amygdalina (bitter leaves), Khaya senegalensis (drywood
    mahogany) seeds, Moringa oleifera (drum stick/horseradish) and Persea americana (avocado) seeds
    exhibited appreciable growth inhibition of Candida spp. and Geotrichium spp. The results indicated that
    yeast infections are prevalent in HIV/AIDS patients and can be controlled with natural products.
