The 8th round of the Grand Challenges Explorations, an initiative of The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is accepting grant proposals for innovative and unconventional global health and development solutions. The online applications will be accepted until Nov. 17, 2011.

Specific to global health, the Foundation is seeking proposals that focus on: designing new approaches to optimize immunization systems; explore new solutions in global health priority areas; explore nutrition for healthy growth of infants and children; and apply synthetic biology to global health challenges. Applicants at any experience level, in any discipline, from any organization (including colleges and universities, government laboratories, research institutions, non-profit organizations and for profit companies) are encouraged to apply.

Successful initial grant recipients each will receive $100,000, and those projects “showing promise” can receive additional support of up to $1 million. For full information and instructions, please visit the Grand Challenges website.
