TB R&D Funding Still Paltry

By on .

Another World TB Day missive just landed in our inbox, this one from the Treatment Action Group.

The AIDS policy group issued a report documenting “severe underfunding” of TB research, despite a desperate need as scientists and doctors search for a new drugs and diagnostics to battle drug-resistant TB.

TAG reports that the total global investment in tuberculosis R&D rose from $363 million in 2005 to $482 million in 2007, a meager jump given the scope of the TB epidemic.

Only the National Institutes of Health and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the top two funders, gave more than $100 million, the TAG report says. NIH support grew by 15 percent from 2005 to 2007, while the Gates Foundation upped its ante by 116 percent.
