A Call for Urgent Action to Address HIV/TB Co-infection

By on .

Leading disease experts will call on President Obama and Congress to mount a concerted and comprehensive response to the deadly alliance between HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis at a Capitol Hill briefing this Thursday, June 25

The call to action from America’s top HIV/TB scientists and physicians comes in conjunction with the release of a new report, “Deadly Duo: The Synergy Between HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis,” from the Center for Global Health Policy.

The Center’s report highlights the scope of TB/HIV co-infection and warns that, without a well-coordinated effort to address these co-joined epidemics, lives rescued from AIDS through access to life-saving HIV drugs will be lost to TB. So far, policymakers have not treated HIV-TB co-infection as an issue in need of an emergency response, despite an enormous death toll from these twin scourges.

The June 25 briefing—to be held from 2 to 3:30 pm in the Senate Visitors Center, US Capitol, Room 215—will feature presentations from two leading HIV/TB experts:

*Dr. Carol Dukes Hamilton, MD, co-chair of the Center for Global Health Policy’s Scientific Advisory Committee and a senior director of research at Family Health International

*and Dr. Diane Havlir, professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and chief of the HIV/AIDS Division at San Francisco General Hospital. Dr. Havlir also serves on the Center’s Scientific Advisory Committee

In addition, Rosemary Mburu, advocacy and policy coordinator for the Kenya AIDS NGOs Consortium, a network of nearly 1,000 community-based HIV/AIDS organizations, will speak about co-infection in Kenya. Christine Lubinski, vice president for global health, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, will serve as moderator for the briefing.

To RSVP for this event, please send an email to globalhealth@idsociety.org. The “Deadly Duo” report will be available Thursday on the Center’s website at www.idsaglobalhealth.org.
