No PEPFAR Implementers Meeting this year or next

By on .

The Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator (OGAC) has alerted the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) country teams that there will not be a PEPFAR implementers meeting in 2011 because of scheduling challenges.  A memo to PEPFAR country teams also noted that there will also be no implementers meeting in 2012 because of the need for PEPFAR to have a strong presence at the International AIDS Society meeting scheduled for Washington, DC, in July 2012.

Instead of an implementers meeting, OGAC will host a U.S. government-only meeting on the PEPFAR program in South Africa in early May. An open PEPFAR implementers meeting has not been held since 2009.   Advocates greeted this news with disappointment since this meeting has provided an opportunity to interact with PEPFAR country team leaders and implementers and gain important insights about the progress and challenges with the scale-up of the AIDS response on the ground.
