The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  issued provisional guidelines for the use and safety monitoring of Bedaquiline, also known as Sirturo, for the treatment of multidrug resistant tuberculosis in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, released today.

The World Health Organization issued its guidance on use of the drug, the first new approach to treating TB in nearly half a century, in June. It received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in December 2012 under an accelerated review process.

The statement accompanying the release of the guidance acknowledges the threat that tuberculosis that has become resistant to the most common first line treatments poses to efforts to control TB worldwide.
