Dr. Daniel Lucey, who has responded to, and monitored information on outbreaks since 2001, updates information on the current spread of a novel coronavirus first noted in central China’s most populous city in December 2019, with a fifth update on the outbreak here. 

How many new cases has Wuhan reported in the last three days?

153 new cases have been reported from Friday, Jan. 17 through Sunday.

Is person-to-person transmission occurring?


Have infections among health workers in Wuhan been reported 

Yes, 14 infections among health workers in Wuhan were confirmed today.

Where else in China have cases been confirmed?

Cases have been confirmed in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, with suspected cases being tested in several other places in China.

What countries outside China have 1 or 2 confirmed cases?

South Korea, Japan, Thailand have each reported one or more confirmed cases. Suspected cases are being tested in other countries.

What has Wuhan done to proactively identify new cases?

The city has set up 61 “fever clinics” to accelerate identification of new cases.

Will the World Health Organization convene an Emergency Committee to advise Director-General Dr. Tedros whether to declare a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC)?

Yes — the committee will convene Wed. Jan. 22.

Daniel Lucey, M.D. MPH, FIDSA, FACP, is an infectious diseases physician and adjunct professor of infectious diseases at Georgetown University Medical Center, a senior scholar at the Georgetown University O’Neil Institute, Anthropology Research Associate, Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America Global Health Committee.He has served as a volunteer medical responder to outbreaks that included the West Africa Ebola crisis. He has collected information on outbreaks starting in 2001 with cases of anthrax in 2001, and including smallpox vaccination 2002, SARS 2003, H5N1 Flu 2004, MERS in 2013, and Ebola in April, 2014, He has gathered, and is updating information on the current outbreak of pneumonia in Wuhan City in the Hubei province of China.

    Thanks Dan for collating and disseminating the information on the outbreak of Wuhan coronavirus for IDSA and the ID community. It has been hard to find and assess the accuracy and completeness of this fast moving story. I wonder if we understand why China has been so slow to share data, after their excellent data sharing during the 2009 flu pandemic.
