Breaking News: Global health leaders get nod to serve as lead Democrats on key House committees

By on .

Two key global health leaders are among the picks U. S. House of Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi just announced among the Democratic Ranking Members for 113th Congress House Committees.  Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY) will assume the top Democratic post on the all important House Appropriations Committee—the committee charged with making annual funding decisions for all federal discretionary programs, including funding for the  President’s Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief, global TB and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Lowey currently serves as the lead Democrat on the State and Foreign Operations Funding Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee and is a stalwart supporter of US investments in global health from HIV to TB to family planning services. Importantly, Lowey is expected to continue to serve as the minority lead of the subcommittee.

Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY) will succeed Howard Berman (D-CA) as the top Democrat of the House Foreign Affairs Committee which has programmatic jurisdiction over all global health programs.

Engel is the co-chair of the Congressional Tuberculosis Caucus and is a longstanding champion of investment in domestic and global tuberculosis services and research.  Engel has also been a leader on the US response to HIV/AIDS both domestically and globally and serves as an active member of the Congressional HIV Caucus.

Science Speaks will continue to feature posts about new Congressional and Obama Administration leaders in global health in the coming weeks.
